The Bubblegum Sequencer – Making Music With Candy

The Bubblegum Sequencer is a physical step sequencer that lets you create drumloops by arranging colored balls on a tangible surface. It generates MIDI events and can be used as an input device to control audio hardware and software. Finally, people can’t claim anymore that electronic music isn’t handmade. For more information, visit backin.de Update: In some instances, the sequencer plays notes that aren’t actually on the table. This is due to the computer vision picking up background light and general noise.

Video by James Houston jim@1030.co.uk Digg this at: digg.com Radiohead held an online contest to remix “Nude” from their album – “In Rainbows” This was quite a difficult task for everybody that entered, as Nude is in 6/8 timing, and 63bpm. Most music that’s played in clubs is around 120bpm and usually 4/4 timing. It’s pretty difficult to seamlessly mix a waltz beat into a DJ set. This resulted in lots of generic entries consisting of a typical 4/4 beat, but with arbitrary clips from “Nude” thrown in so that they qualified for the contest. Thom Yorke joked at the ridiculousness of it in an interview for NPR radio, hinting that they set the competition to find out how people would approach such a challenging task. I decided to take the piss a bit, as the contest seemed to be in that spirit. Based on the lyric (and alternate title) “Big Ideas: Don’t get any” I grouped together a collection of old redundant hardware, and placed them in a situation where they’re trying their best to do something that they’re not exactly designed to do, and not quite getting there. It doesn’t sound great, as it’s not supposed to. Sinclair ZX Spectrum – Guitars (rhythm & lead) Epson LX-81 Dot Matrix Printer – Drums HP Scanjet 3c – Bass Guitar Hard Drive array – Act as a collection of bad speakers – Vocals & FX Thanks to Afrotech and Dr Roland Shregle (ganjatron)

How would a socker game sound?
how do i get it
how do u get it
I had an idea. Possibly you could put a “freeze” button on the table, which keeps the camera from updating. That way, you could press it while you are placing a gumball in a hole, and not trigger the camera. When you let go, the camera updates with the new pattern!
This seems like it’d be alot more trouble than it’s worth.

Fucking incredible. That’s the only way to describe this.
@danytoon Detto.
If Nude would have made it onto the Kid A-album, it would have sounded just like this. Amazing I must say.
This is EPIC! Though i think it may have been a tiny bit better if the bits on the end of the HD arms had been bent a tad bit away as to prevent the buzzing and produce a clearer sound, though i guess either way works.
holy god yes
This is a great cover. I like it
Better than the original .
i can’t get over the brilliance of this video. it’s like each piece of equipment has its own character and like the deion says they’re trying so hard to do something they’re not quite made to do. i would’ve loved to see radiohead especially thom’s reaction to watching this video.
Two years and still coming to see that video…
holy crap thats awesome
This video makes me shiver everytime I see it, from the firt one until today. You’re a total genius
@UntitledNumbers Aha! So I wasn’t going loopy after all XD Thank you, I thought it’d be something like that. Pretty cool =]
the first 70 seconds of this is like a deleted scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey
@animemaster446 James Houston produced it whilst he studied Visual Communication at the GSA.
This is fantastic… I love the way it just works. I love the old-fashioned equipment, I love the good feeling it gives. thanks a lot for this, for improving my night-shift big time!
THAT’S AWESOME!

Anyone who wants to listen to both tracks at the same time for whatever reason can play the original in windows media player and increase it’s speed to 1.558 in speed settings.
this is quite possibly most awesome cover ever.
for those who don’t get it – the part up until 1:10 is loading. the actual song starts after that
I am madly in love with this.
This is Spectacular….I love the creativity…This cover is GREAT….finally, a cover in the spirit of the original artist. A breath of fresh air.
And everybody thinks I’m weird whenever I hear melodies in these types of machines. Awesome.
